Our Vision
Group
would like to see a space that is used and enjoyed by people of all ages,
where the use is appropriate for this urban and historic setting.
What are the St. Nicholas Green Spaces?
The three
open spaces are many things to many people! They are all different and each
one has a separate character They all form a vital green lung in the centre
of the city for recreation and quite enjoyment. They also form the curtilage
to the listed and historic church (the oldest building in Brighton).
Although, technically they are not a parks the use is very similar on how
parks are used e.g.. dog walking, relaxation etc. The spaces are all public
open space as the responsibility for their care had previously transferred
to the Council.
To others
they are the churchyards and former burial grounds of St.
Nicholas Church, although many of
the gravestones have been relocated to the edge or have been removed.
Why are we not called
the Friends of Open Spaces?
The Group has the same aims and objectives as other Friends of a park
groups. However, our complication is that a there is already a ‘ Friends of
St Nicholas Church’ who are
interested mainly in the fabric of the historic church ( although their
remit can include the churchyard).
Therefore, it was felt our name should
clearly separate us from Church and its own Friends Group. However, we do
enjoy their support and hope to work together on future projects.
